Plan by route, not by checklist
Ten independently checked ways to understand the island: old-town lanes, Delos, rural interiors, beach-hopping, food, hiking, cycling and the exposed north and east. Each guide separates a realistic route from the assumptions that create access or safety problems.
Guide set last updated:
The stop lists are orientation tools, not GPX tracks or promises of access. Sea, hiking, cycling and 4x4 routes remain subject to current conditions and lawful access.
An exposed ruins walk and museum visit, not a beach day
Delos compresses sacred, civic, commercial and domestic history into one walkable archaeological landscape. A dedicated visit gives the core sanctuary and museum room to breathe; the Theatre Quarter and Mount Kynthos belong only when the return sailing and your pace genuinely allow them.
Key correction
The inscribed World Heritage property is Delos alone. Rhenia belongs to the wider Greek archaeological landscape, but it is outside the UNESCO boundary.
An exterior-first loop from Yialos to Kastro
Read Mykonos Town as a working settlement rather than a whitewashed maze. The route links its waterfront, commercial lanes, old wells, grain mills, merchant houses and fortified quarter. Church and museum interiors add value when open, but the route remains complete without promising a single doorway.
Key correction
Much of the historic core feels pedestrian, but scooters, loading traffic, stone paving, gradients and steps remain. The complete loop is not reliably wheelchair accessible.
A driven sampler of viewpoints, village context and one beach
A short island circuit works when it admits what it is: a first-day orientation with scenic driving and brief stops. The defensible sequence crosses the west coast, a public viewpoint outside Armenistis, Ftelia Bay, Ano Mera and one southeast beach. It is not the whole island in four hours.
Key correction
Driving and stop time compete with each other. A realistic short route chooses one southeast beach and treats the other places as brief orientation stops; deeper village time or a second coastline needs a longer route.
Seven checked water-taxi stations, or a cruise with selected anchorages
Decide whether you want to get off at named beaches or stay aboard for a hosted coastal day. The checked water taxi follows a published Ornos–Elia station sequence and allows later continuation. A cruise normally passes more beach names but chooses only one or two swim anchorages according to conditions.
Key correction
The water taxi is scheduled transport between named stations. A hosted cruise can pass the same coastline while selecting only one or two condition-dependent anchorages. Pass-by, offshore swim and landing ashore without swimming must be stated separately.
Archaeology at Delos, condition-dependent swimming at Rhenia
A combination day joins two neighbouring islands that serve different purposes. Delos is the UNESCO archaeological property and official visitor guidance says not to swim at its coast. Rhenia is the intended swim area and part of a wider archaeological and protected marine landscape. The product title alone does not tell you whether Delos is entered, how long the visit lasts or whether anyone steps ashore at Rhenia.
Key correction
Checked formats range from viewing Delos only from the sea to short or longer site visits. Delos is the no-swimming archaeology island; Rhenia is the intended swim component, often from an anchored vessel. Site entry, guide status, sequence and water-entry method must each be disclosed.
Ftelia · Palaikastro · Ano Mera · Maou · Kalafatis
This is a vehicle circuit with short, contained walks at individual stops. It links Neolithic and later archaeology, a lived village, an active monastery when open, a pre-confirmed rural visit and a southeast-coast finish without pretending that the road links form a walking trail.
Key correction
The main-road links do not have continuous pavements. Use a legal vehicle between stops and walk only within the bay, site-edge, village, rural venue and beach areas that have been checked for the day.
Old Port · Matoyianni · Lakka · Kato Mili · Yialos
Use Chora's compact lanes as a modular framework for genuinely Mykonian and Cycladic foods. Confirm every live business, dish, ingredient origin and allergen on the day; the fixed parts of this guide are the walking geography, food context and honest limits, not a permanent vendor list.
Key correction
Kopanisti is a Cycladic PDO cheese, and louza is a cured-pork tradition shared with Tinos and neighbouring Cycladic islands. The 17th-century bakery setting is heritage; current operation, products, hours and wood firing are separate live checks.
Northwest viewpoint · North coast · Ano Mera · Rural east · Southeast coast
The defensible wild-island experience is a guided full-day loop, not an unrestricted self-drive track. Expect repeated vehicle entry and exit, exposed viewpoints, short uneven walks and a route that changes with permission, weather and road conditions.
Key correction
Road rules, land ownership and heritage protection still apply. Any visit to the lighthouse site needs prior special permission; use a verified public viewpoint outside it by default. No managed mine visitor route was verified, and galleries or unstable structures must never be entered.
8.8 km short return · 14.9 km longer circuit
Maou–Fokos cycling currently has two genuine guided formats, not one approximate route. Preserve each distance, elevation and time separately, match riders by handling skill rather than kilometres alone, and treat the map as corridor context instead of a public GPX.
Key correction
They are separate current products. The short 8.8 km route gains 65 m and returns to its start; the 14.9 km circuit gains 184 m, adds Ano Mera, more climbing and a short traffic-exposed section, then returns by a different trail.
5.1 km short route · 9.8 km extension · guided linear format
The best-supported current route moves through Maou and a reservoir viewpoint to Myrsini (Mersini), with vehicle recovery. It is not a verified public trail to Fokos, and the two published distances are separate variants whose route, return time and support must be confirmed in writing.
Key correction
The detailed current itinerary ends the short route at Myrsini (Mersini). The 5.1 km and 9.8 km figures describe short and extended commercial variants, not one official trail. Do not merge older Fokos wording into this route.
