Mykonos

Mykonos's club scene is the reason most summer visitors come, and the 2026 season is well-documented with confirmed artist residencies. Scorpios on Paraga Beach opens 10 May with Reznik, Jean Claude Ades, and Lannka; its summer residencies include Peggy Gou, Dixon, Bedouin, WhoMadeWho, and the full Keinemusik collective across four dates. Cavo Paradiso - the hilltop venue with caldera views - opens late May and runs nightly at peak season. SantAnna has Black Coffee as Monday resident every week in July and August, plus Mahmut Orhan, Vintage Culture, and The Martinez Brothers across the season. The 20-25 August XLSIOR Festival is the single most concentrated week of the season. Venue programming is released on a rolling basis from March onwards; check each venue's official calendar for exact dates. The end-of-season closing parties typically fall in mid-October. Peak prices and peak crowds coincide with peak programming: July 15 - August 25 is the most intense window.

Ohi Day ('No' Day) is Greece's second major national holiday and is felt more personally on island communities - which bore disproportionate losses during the Axis occupation - than in large cities. On Mykonos the celebrations are modest but sincere: the parade is led by schoolchildren in traditional Mykonian dress while families wave flags from pavements and balconies. Local officials pay respects at the war memorial. The island is entering its shoulder season by late October: most beach clubs have closed, accommodation is cheaper, and the pace is calm. This is a good moment to see Mykonos as the locals do before the winter quiet sets in. Ferries, restaurants, and tourist services remain open. Fixed date every year: 28 October.

The feast of Agios Nikolaos is the most important winter celebration specific to Mykonos's seafaring identity. The Church of Agios Nikolaos sits at the edge of the Old Port and is the spiritual focal point for the island's fishing and maritime community. The coastal litany - a procession of the icon along the waterfront - is one of the most photogenic midwinter moments the island offers. The community feast afterwards is a purely local affair: no tourist infrastructure surrounds it. December on Mykonos is mild (average 11-13°C), very quiet, and remarkably cheap. The island's Christmas season also begins on this day and runs through Epiphany (6 January), with the Cycladic tradition of decorating model boats rather than fir trees. Worth planning a trip around if you want to experience the island stripped of its summer persona. Fixed feast date: 6 December every year.

The Cycladic Christmas boat tradition is the most distinctive local custom: wooden model karavakia (boats) are decorated with lights and hung in windows, doorways, and the main square as a maritime community's alternative to the fir tree. Children go from house to house singing kalanda accompanied by small model boats and traditional instruments. The feast of Agios Stefanos on 27 December brings locals to the eponymous church and village for an evening of Mykonian song with tsabounes (bagpipes) and violins. Mykonos in late December is genuinely atmospheric and uncrowded: whitewashed lanes are strung with lights, the harbour is quiet, and the pace is unhurried. New Year's Eve (31 December) is the exception - the town square and Old Port host live music and an outdoor celebration. Fixed dates every year.
