About Crete
Crete is Greece on a different scale. It is the largest island in the country, with mountain ranges that hold snow into spring, a south coast facing the Libyan Sea, and enough palaces, gorges, beaches and villages to fill several separate holidays. Many visitors treat it as one destination and see a fraction of it. The better approach is to choose a base and explore outward. The island's four main bases sit along the north coast, and each gives a different holiday. Heraklion puts you next to Knossos and the Archaeological Museum. Chania pairs a Venetian harbour with the famous beaches of the west, including Elafonisi and Balos. Rethymno balances the two, with an old town of its own and long sandy beaches. Agios Nikolaos opens up the calmer east, with Spinalonga and the palm forest of Vai within reach. In between lie the experiences that made Crete famous: walking the Samaria Gorge through the White Mountains, boat trips to coasts you cannot reach by road, Minoan sites that predate classical Greece by a thousand years, and a food culture that Cretans will tell you, correctly, is a cuisine of its own. Distances are real here, so plan by region rather than trying to see everything from one spot. Whichever base you choose, the tours below cover the whole island.

4 guidesHeraklion Airport → Chania Town
147 km across Crete, about two hours by road. There is no direct bus, whatever you have read: you change in Heraklion, and that second ticket is the half everyone quotes. Fares, the two-leg bus route step by step, and three transfer quotes we pulled ourselves on the same day.
Open guideHeraklion Airport → Agios Nikolaos & Elounda
65 km east to Agios Nikolaos, 75 km to Elounda, about an hour either way. Published taxi fares, why Elounda needs three buses where Agios Nikolaos needs two, and the last local bus at 22:00 that strands people.
Open guideHeraklion Airport → Hersonissos, Stalis & Malia
27 km to Hersonissos, 39 km to Malia, half an hour by road. Published taxi fares per village, a coach every half hour until midnight once you reach the station, and the one thing to check before you pay for a transfer you already own.
Open guideHeraklion Airport → Rethymno
80 km west, a €9.90 coach every hour until 22:30, and one station change nobody warns you about. Fares straight from the operator's own ticket system, why the fast express is no use here, and the case for flying into Chania instead.
