Eat & Drink Like a Local

Where Athenians actually eat and drink, away from the tourist core. Plaka, Monastiraki and the Acropolis slopes are for visitors; the people who live here eat in the neighbourhoods, and this list follows them. It runs from the century-old cook-shops of the central market, through the family tavernas of Ano Petralona and Pangrati, to the cheap meze of Exarcheia and the refugee-heritage kitchens of Kaisariani, and it pairs the old rebetadika and ouzeri with the bars where younger Athenians drink, at honest prices, in Kerameikos, Kypseli and Metaxourgeio. Every place comes from Greek locals on forums, the Athens food press and resident tips, and is independently verified as open and genuinely local. The illustrations are ours; the places are very real.

Where to eat

Diporto — Mageireio, no sign, since the 1880s

Diporto

Διπόρτο

€€
≈ €10-15 per person
  • •No sign and no menu, down a cellar trapdoor
  • •Wine drawn from the barrels along the wall
  • •A market-workers' institution since the 1880s

Mageireio, no sign, since the 1880s · Sokratous and Theatrou, Central Market

The most famous secret in Athens: an unmarked basement cook-shop by the central market where you descend through cellar doors, share a table, and eat five or six home-style dishes a day with wine from the barrel. It is discovered now and the odd bill runs high, so go for the ritual as much as the food.

Suggested: revithia (chickpeas), the daily stew, barrel retsina

Market patsatzidiko, since 1898 · Filopoimenos 4, Varvakios Market

A market mageireio that has fed Varvakios porters and night owls since 1898, tucked into a covered arcade among the butchers. It is the place for patsas and magiritsa, the working soups Athenians swear by, in a plain old room of marble tables and framed photographs.

Suggested: patsas (tripe soup), magiritsa, the daily stews

Taverna tou Oikonomou — Mageireio, since 1930

Taverna tou Oikonomou

Ταβέρνα του Οικονόμου

  • •Slow-cooked pot dishes only, no frying
  • •A neighbourhood bedrock since 1930
  • •Barely registers with visitors

Mageireio, since 1930 · Kydantidon and Troon, Ano Petralona

The bedrock of Ano Petralona and the closest thing on this list to a perfect locals' kitchen: a 1930 mageireio serving nothing but slow-cooked pot dishes, on a quiet corner opposite the old open-air cinema. The regulars, described as the neighbourhood's professors and architects, have refused to let the menu change.

Suggested: rooster kokkinisto with pasta, rabbit stifado, spanakopita

Old-style oinomageireio · Kallisthenous 85, Plateia Merkouri, Petralona

An old-style wine-kitchen on Plateia Merkouri that looks and feels like a kafeneio of another Athens, with the name painted across the front glass and tables under the trees. Its customers are almost entirely Greek, among the most local on this list. A separate Cretan mezedopoleio, Karderina, sits a couple of blocks along the same street.

Taverna, since 1968 · Ionon 61, Petralona

The Ugly Duckling has stubbornly stayed in an older, more innocent Athens since 1968, run today by the daughter of its founder. It is a cluttered, homely Petralona taverna of charcoal portraits and checked cloths, and its regulars stay firmly Greek.
