Ohi Day ('No Day') is one of Greece's two great national holidays, combining patriotic pride with genuine historical weight. In Kavala the parade typically passes along the seafront and through the centre, with schoolchildren in formation followed by military and civic representatives. The day is a public holiday - most businesses close. For visitors this is primarily of interest as a window into civic Greek life rather than a spectacle in itself; the parade in Thessaloniki (about 150 km west) is larger and includes senior military and government figures if a grander event is desired. Kavala's version is honest, local, and brief, typically over by midday.

The Christmas cultural programme is one of the longer-running municipal winter festivals in northern Greece, reflecting Kavala's investment in year-round cultural life. Events span all age groups: professional theatrical productions and concerts for adults sit alongside children's storytelling, craft workshops, and fairground attractions. The city centre is decorated with lights from the seafront promenade to the castle, and the Christmas market (typically in the main square) offers handmade gifts, seasonal food, and hot drinks. This is not a signature destination event in the way that the Cosmopolis or Philippi Festivals are, but it makes December a pleasant month to visit a city that is otherwise very quiet for tourism. Accommodation is readily available and cheaper than summer. The programme runs throughout December with a concentration of events in the final two weeks before Christmas.

Saint Nicholas is one of the most widely venerated saints in Greece, and his feast is a national holiday for the Greek Navy and merchant fleet. In a historic port city like Kavala, this carries particular local resonance: the harbourside church processions and the blessing of boats are attended by fishing families whose livelihoods depend on the sea. Traditional preparations in Greek homes include carp wrapped in dough alongside boiled grains and vegetables - a pre-Christmas fast-day feast. The atmosphere is devotional rather than festive-commercial, making this a good choice for visitors who want to observe genuine local religious life. Kavala's Tobacco Museum and waterfront are at their quietest in December, and combining the saint's day with a visit to the Old Town and Imaret makes for a rich winter day in the city.
